Supermarket loyalty cards without a smartphone: your UK options
No smartphone? Compare UK supermarket loyalty cards you can use in store, offers you can activate online, and rewards that still need an app.
Yesβsome UK supermarket loyalty benefits work without a smartphone. An existing physical Tesco Clubcard, Nectar card or Morrisons More Card can be used for eligible in-store member prices and rewards; an existing M&S Sparks card also supports some perks. Co-op Group offers a temporary card you can register by telephone. If you have a computer, you can also unlock certain Sainsburyβs Your Nectar Prices, My Waitrose Personalised Offers and M&S Sparks offers online, then use the linked card in store where the offer permits.
But a physical card does not replace an app for every reward. Joining, collecting points, selecting an offer and redeeming a voucher may each have different requirements. The comparison below separates what works with a plastic card from what needs a website or smartphone.
Choose your route before you shop
Start with the situation that applies to you:
- Already have a physical card? Check that it is active and linked to the right account. For standard member prices, you may only need to scan it. Personalised offers can have extra conditions.
- Have a computer but no smartphone? Look for a retailerβs website option to register, order a card or activate an eligible offer. Do this before shopping; taking the plastic card to the till alone might not be enough.
- Have no internet access? Ask Morrisons staff how to apply for a physical More Card in store, or consider Co-op Groupβs temporary-card and telephone-registration route. Do not assume that every personalised reward is available wholly offline.
Whichever route you choose, answer three questions before making a special trip:
- Can I use an official physical card? Check whether you already have one and whether the retailer offers a way to obtain or replace it. The rules for using an existing card can differ from those for getting a new card.
- Can I prepare the offer on a computer? If the retailer supports website activation, select or unlock the specific offer before shopping, then scan the linked card. The exact item, pack size, shop and offer expiry can matter.
- Does redemption still require an app? Read the instructions for the individual reward, not just the schemeβs joining page. Collecting points by card or telephone number does not necessarily allow you to redeem an app-generated voucher.
No internet at all? Morrisons says you can apply for a free More Card with help from colleagues in store; ask what is needed for registration and the particular reward. At a participating Co-op Group food store, you can buy a Β£1 temporary membership card, then register it by calling 0800 023 4708 and choose a plastic card. Register as soon as possible: Co-opβs FAQ says 12 weeks, but its membership terms say within one month of first use. Follow the shorter period unless Co-op confirms otherwise. Tesco also lists 0800 591 688 for certain existing Clubcard or account-access problems; that does not establish a general telephone signup route for new members.
Could Tesco or Nectar help you join without internet? In its September 2026 loyalty-scheme comparison, consumer organisation Which? reports that Tesco Clubcard need not require a smartphone or computer and that Nectar may register someone without an email address if they contact its helpline. However, Tescoβs public instructions focus on online signup, and Nectarβs current new-card instructions direct new members to nectar.com or the app.
If you have no internet access, call before travelling. Nectar lists 0344 811 0811 for telephone support on its official contact page. Calls to 0344 numbers may be included in your allowance; otherwise charges depend on your provider. Ask whether you can register without email and obtain a plastic card under the current process. Nectarβs published physical-card guidance directs customers to live chat, so telephone signup and card issuance are not guaranteed. For Tesco, ask Clubcard support about its current offline joining process; the existing-card replacement number mentioned above does not prove new-member telephone signup. Do not assume shops still have Nectar plastic signup packs.
What the main physical-card routes let you do
These are examples for eligible adult shoppers, not a promise that every benefit works without a phone. Check the participating store and exact terms. In particular, Co-op Group is not the same programme as every independent co-operative society.
| Scheme | Using an existing card | Getting a physical card | What a computer can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesco Clubcard | Scan a valid plastic Clubcard for eligible ordinary Clubcard Prices and points. | Existing members can order a replacement plastic card on Tescoβs website; the same page explains support if you cannot access your account or card number. | Some invited members can unlock Your Clubcard Prices on tesco.com. | Your Clubcard Prices eligibility is restricted to selected Tesco app users, even though eligible members can unlock online. A replacement-card route does not prove every first-card route. |
| Morrisons More | Scan a physical More Card for eligible More Card Prices and points. | A More Card is free; Morrisons says you can apply online or with staff in store. Ask about physical-card registration. | Personalised offers may appear on the website, as well as in the app or on printed checkout coupons. | At 5,000 More Points, Morrisons says a More Fiver can be printed in store if you do not use the app. Not every offer or account-management step is necessarily offline. |
| Nectar at Sainsburyβs | Scan or swipe a linked physical Nectar card for eligible standard Nectar Prices at participating stores (not Sainsburyβs Local). | Join at nectar.com, then request a plastic card through account support; Nectar can review requests by live chat. Store plastic registration packs are no longer provided, and a card is not posted automatically. | Register online and unlock eligible Your Nectar Prices at nectar.com before shopping. | Standard Nectar Prices and personalised Your Nectar Prices have different rules. You must use the linked card and buy an exact eligible item. |
| M&S Sparks | An existing physical Sparks card still provides some perks, such as an eligible birthday treat and a charity donation, without a smartphone or computer. | M&S documents linking existing physical cards, but does not promise that every store issues new ones; ask M&S Customer Services about current availability. | Use a computer or tablet to activate eligible offers and manage the digital Sparks wallet. | To load wallet rewards onto a Sparks card, M&S requires a registered mobile number and a six-digit security code. A physical card alone does not give access to the full wallet. See official Sparks FAQs. |
| My Waitrose | Scan a physical or printable copy of the card for eligible member benefits. | Request a physical card or print a copy through your account; contact Customer Care if an online account is not an option. | Select eligible Personalised Offers online at waitrose.com/mywaitrose, then scan the linked card. | Some separately labelled personalised vouchers require a barcode shown on a phone. A printable card is not a printable offer. |
| Co-op Group | Scan the member card for eligible member prices; a temporary card is available before full registration. | Buy a Β£1 temporary card in a Co-op Group food store, register by phone or website, and choose a plastic card. | Co-opβs terms describe selecting some weekly offers on its website for use with the membership card. | The FAQ and terms conflict on the registration deadline; act within a month. Independent co-operatives may have different schemes. |
A member price, a points balance and a personalised voucher are not interchangeable. Check which benefit you actually want before choosing a route.
Check local eligibility too. My Waitroseβs current membership terms say applicants must be at least 18 and resident in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Channel Islands; member offers apply only in eligible locations and exclude some sites, including Waitrose petrol stations and motorway service stations. This is the retailerβs published rule, which differs from the narrower geographical list in Which?βs September 2026 comparison. If you live in Northern Ireland, confirm the current membership and offer arrangements with Waitrose before relying on them. For Sainsburyβs, standard Nectar Prices exclude Sainsburyβs Local. Your Nectar Prices are a different scheme and have separate Local-store requirements.
Prepare supported offers on a computer
Sainsburyβs: Your Nectar Prices. Sainsburyβs says you can register via nectar.com and unlock eligible personalised prices online, even without the Nectar app. First ensure that the card you will scan is linked to your account. Unlock the offer before shopping, purchase the exact eligible product, and scan or swipe Nectar at the participating checkout before paying. This is separate from standard Nectar Prices, which do not require weekly unlocking. At Sainsburyβs Local, Your Nectar Prices work only when using SmartShop (the app or a handset); a normal card scan at the till is not an equivalent alternative there.
Spending Nectar points is different from getting Nectar Prices. At Sainsburyβs, Nectar says you can spend points with a plastic card by swiping its black magnetic strip along the side of the Chip & PIN machine and selecting the card to redeem from. Scanning the plastic cardβs barcode does not spend points at Sainsburyβs, although that barcode can still be used to collect points and access eligible prices. Check the balance and redemption requirements before shopping.
Illustrative example: You already have a plastic Nectar card and access to a computer. You log in, unlock an available personalised offer on something you already planned to buy, check the product and pack size, and scan the linked card at checkout. This illustrates retailer instructions, not a first-hand purchase or a guaranteed saving. For broader points advice, see Hermβs guide to using Nectar points.
My Waitrose: Personalised Offers. Waitrose says you can select these offers online and receive them when you scan the linked My Waitrose card at the till. Offers vary between members and may not always be available. Do not assume every voucher uses this route: a different personalised-vouchers help page explains some in-store redemptions that need a voucher barcode displayed on a phone. Read the instructions for the particular benefit. Printing the card does not make a phone-barcode voucher printable; a separate, conditional Little Treats paper-voucher route is explained below.
My Waitrose Little Treats: a conditional paper-voucher route. Under Waitroseβs published terms, when Little Treats offers are running, eligible members with a My Waitrose card not linked to an online account can receive a printed voucher at the till after reaching a qualifying-spend milestone. Eligibility also depends on a linked transaction in the preceding 13 weeks and other scheme conditions. Printed vouchers are redeemable in store only, cannot be reprinted and are subject to expiry, product and store restrictions. This is a separate, conditional benefitβnot a way to print the personalised vouchers that require a phone barcode.
Co-op Group: website-selected offers. Co-opβs membership terms describe choosing available weekly digital offers through the Co-op website and adding them to your card. This may help a registered member with computer access, but it is not a wholly offline route and does not make every app-based benefit available without a smartphone.
Check where an app is still needed
Tesco personalised prices need a separate eligibility check. Your Clubcard Prices terms describe website unlocking, but eligibility is by invitation to selected Tesco app users. Do not assume a plastic Clubcard alone qualifies you. For ordinary prices and reward use, see Hermβs Tesco Clubcard guide.
Lidl Plus separates collecting from redeeming. Under Lidlβs Great Britain terms, an existing member can provide the mobile number linked to the account to collect Lidl Points at checkout. But exchanging points for reward coupons and redeeming them requires app steps, including activation and scanning the digital card. This is not a complete smartphone-free reward route, and the cited terms exclude Northern Ireland. Hermβs Lidl Plus guide covers the app-led experience rather than an offline workaround.
Asda Rewards does not offer a proven physical-card voucher workaround. Its Rewards terms discuss website access, but in-store voucher redemption instructions require the voucher barcode and digital Rewards card from the app. Do not assume that managing an account online also lets you redeem the same voucher without a smartphone.
Iceland Bonus Club is a different kind of case. Existing physical Bonus Club cards can still be used, including for in-store top-ups, but Icelandβs current customer-support guidance says physical cards are available through Customer Care only in special cases. New membership is primarily app-led, so do not plan on receiving a new plastic card at the till without confirming an exception. Bonus Clubβs savings balance also works differently from a simple member-price card.
Make one final check before your next shop
Before you leave:
- Confirm that your card is registered, active and linked to the relevant account where required.
- Select or unlock any offer that cannot be activated at the till.
- Check the exact product, size, store and expiry date.
- Confirm that you can complete the redemption step, not just collect points. If spending Nectar points at Sainsburyβs with a plastic card, use its magnetic strip rather than expecting the barcode to redeem them.
- Compare the itemβs unit price and your planned basket total with alternatives. A loyalty discount is not necessarily the cheapest choice, and buying something extra to earn a reward may cost more than it saves.
At checkout, scan or present the applicable card before paying and check the receipt. If a route is uncertain, contact the retailer first rather than travelling for a discount that may not apply.
Once access is sorted, you can compare supermarket loyalty schemes. Choose the scheme that fits shops you already make, not one that encourages unnecessary purchases.
